Danae Mercer Ricci, 36, stunned fans after she tested out beauty hacks that involved rubbing fruit and veg on her face – but it had a pleasantly surprising result

Usually, when beauty hacks go viral they make the application process much easier, helping you get the latest looks just a neat in a smaller amount of time.

If we told you that you could get your trending fake freckles by dabbing broccoli on your face – would you try it? Most of us wouldn’t – but apparently, using fruit and vegetables to apply your makeup is the latest viral trend.

However, you won’t have to try them yourself as body-positivity influencer and journalist Danae Mercer Ricci has done the testing for you. The 36-year-old, from the US, has built up an impressive 2million followers on Instagram thanks to her self-love dedicated posts and ‘online’ vs ‘reality’ snaps.

In her latest clip, which has received more than 123,000 likes, she took to social media in an attempt to ‘de-influence’ people by showing the truth behind the bizarre beauty trend. She was seen applying freckles with broccoli, eyeliner with a banana and even made blush and a lip tint from beetroot.

While many of us may assume it wouldn’t work — because standing in your room rubbing veggies on your face isn’t exactly ‘normal’ — Danae was actually, pleasantly surprised. She wrote: “Banana didn’t work for me (what’s the secret? I tried multiple bananas…).

“Broccoli freckles were genius but took some practice. And beetroot was perfection.”

Instagram viewers were also surprised by how well some of them worked and even said they would try it out for themselves at home. One user said: “Why I wonder do people do this. I mean…cool?”

Another joked: “No way not with the price of groceries these days!” A third commented: “The beet one is so lovely! How nice to be able to put some thing on our cheeks that doesn’t contain weird chemicals”.

While a fourth wrote: “Women used beets centuries ago as rouge, lip colour and to dye clothing 🙂 I grow them in my garden and always use them as a lip & cheek tint while making dinner!”
