Sun, sex and margaritas make the perfect ingredients for summer.
At least that’s what you’d like to think.
But it turns out hanky panky isn’t on a lot of people’s minds as the weather continues to heat up.
Both cuffing and uncuffing seasons have become more of a trend in recent years, with many people craving connection during the lonely winter months and looking to let loose in summer.
To find out how many people are jumping on the trend, Lovehoney surveyed over 1,000 sexually active adults about what time of year they would rather be single or coupled up.
And it turns out summer is the time to make the most of doing your own thing.
As we head into uncuffing season, Lovehoney’s survey revealed that nearly three-quarters (73%) of us would prefer to be single – or “uncuffed” – this summer, while just 18% would choose to be in a relationship.
Two-thirds (66%) of people would also take part in cuffing season when the time comes, saying they would prefer to be in a relationship during winter.
Sex and relationship expert, Christine Rafe, said: “In my practice, I notice that many people are more physically active, spend more time outdoors and generally feel more confident in themselves over the summer/warmer months.
“It’s likely that this influences willingness to date, as well as have more casual sexual encounters.”
Men are less likely to get uncuffed this summer, with a quarter (25%) saying they would rather be in a relationship.
It seems we all see the appeal of uncuffing season, as both men (71%) and women (74%) agree that living their best single life is the preferred option during summer.
However, men are slightly less likely to jump on the trend, as a quarter (25%) admitted they would prefer to be in a relationship at this time of year, compared to only 15% of women who said the same.
As for winter, over two-thirds (70%) of women said they prefer to be in a relationship during the colder season, while only half (50%) of men said they would rather be coupled up.
Regardless of the time of year, sexperts say it’s important to put your sexual happiness first.
With this in mind, Christine shared some top tips for having the sex you want should you wish to explore your desires this summer.
She said: “Be curious about a partner(s) sexual interests and fantasies and consider whether it’s something that might be a turn-on for you too (or if there is a willingness to try it and find out).
“Casual sex, or sex in a new relationship, can be perfect to open yourself up to new experiences and celebrate the variety of other people’s sexual desires.
“If a partner is sharing with you, think about what you’d be willing to share about your own desires and fantasies.
“We can use the seasons to encourage curiosity and exploration sexually.
“For example, during the colder/winter months, think sensual showers and baths together, warm oil massages, furry blankets on the floor by a fire (or heater), sex on the couch (Netflix-and-chill style) and sex that has lots of body to body contact such as missionary, spooning, seated sex and wrapping your legs around your partner etc.
“In summer, consider sandy post-beach sex, cowgirl, oral sex, outdoor sex, exploring with ice cubes etc.”
