‘I sat front row at London Fashion Week and have never felt more like Bridget Jones’

I decided to head to a glitzy London Fashion Week show and got the chance to sit FROW. However, I wasn’t expecting to come out feeling quite so much like Bridget Jones

Now you may think the life of a journalist is very glamorous, and it sometimes can be, but very rarely for me these days to be honest.

As a working mum who now lives out of the city, going to fancy events is quite few and far between.

However, when I was invited to sit front row for Rocky Star’s London Fashion Week show, I knew I had to go if I could. So I booked my train tickets and waited in anticipation for the day to arrive.

Going to a LFW show is obviously a big deal for most people and I know some people would hire stylists and have a whole team getting them ready so they could stand out at the event. But honestly, doing a working day, looking after a child and other household responsibilities etc doesn’t leave me that much time in the day for much else.

A few days before the show though, I did try on a couple of outfits and find a smart Mango shirt that I thought would look good at the event. I decided I’d pair it with my trusty black skirt and all would be great.

As I got to London for the event (after leaving my bank card at home and having to return for it), I wasn’t feeling so confident in my outfit.

I decided to quickly have a look around and see if I could find something else. Being at London Waterloo station, there’s not obviously many options so Oliver Bonas is probably the most my style there, so I headed into there.

Not much captured my eye – but a fluffy pink jumper turned my head for some reason. It was so out of the blue as I’m not really a pink girl but something about it attracted me, so I tried it on and decided I’d wear that to the event instead.

I felt it probably went a bit better with my heeled black boots I had on, which give me height but are also not going to cripple my feet when walking across London.

So off I headed to the show, which was held at St John’s Church in Paddington. I got there a bit early so decided to phone my partner while I accessed the crowd.

I had gone on my own as I wasn’t sure if I was allowed a plus one. And things can sometimes change last minute for me with my son, so I didn’t want to let anyone down if I couldn’t make it in the end.

After a quick chat with my other half, I was ready to hit the crowd and mingle. Seeing as I was on the FROW, I was stood in the priority line, which got in first.

However, I’m pretty sure some people thought I was working the door (probably as I was wrapped up in a fluffy hat and coat unlike the fashionable lot) as people kept asking me where they had to go.

I also got a chancer who came up to me and tried to trick me into emailing him my ticket as he ‘wasn’t sure his was right’. I’m not that gullible hun, sorry!

Finally I was in and on the FROW. And honestly, I’ve probably never felt more out of place in my life. I thought my outfit had been okay as I have been to a daytime LFW show before and it wasn’t that dressy.

However, apparently these days people go all out, especially for an evening one. Most of the crowd looked like they were ready to walk the catwalk while I pretty much looked like I was ready for a day shopping in town followed by a cheeky Nandos.

I even had my Oliver Bonas bag with me as it wouldn’t fit in my tiny handbag, so I had to place that under the chair for it not to get in anyone’s snaps. Nothing is glamorous about a carrier bag, let’s be honest.

I had also forgot to put foundation on my face as I’d had a busy morning working and sorting out my flat sale on my lunch, so I was just rocking a bit of bronzer and my eye makeup. Whoops!

Feeling a bit awkward in my fashion faux pas, I sat there contemplating all the choices I had made up until the moment. However, that’s when I started talking to the lovely lady next to me – Kitty Cowell. She’s a stylist who also has a fab column on Kerrang.com.

Kitty asked if I’d take a photo of her and her friend, singer BEATRICH, on the FROW, which I was happy to do and she returned the favour. We then got talking about our careers and I got to find out all the exciting things she works on.

After a good old chat, the show started and I got to see all the breathtaking Rocky Star fashion. Designer Rocky draws inspiration from the Baroque and Gothic time periods, with influences and traces seen across all his collections, and I definitely saw that on the catwalk.

The collection was largely black and gold with some floral patterns in there too, as well as a lot of glitz. The designer, from Bombay, India, has been known to design for Beyoncé, Paris Hilton the Pussycat Dolls, so he’s definitely one of the best of the best and it as great to see his new collection.

When the show finished, I said my goodbyes to Kitty and grabbed her email before deciding to head back. I was on a high from being at such a glam event, however that was quickly muted when I realised I was an hour early for my train and my ticket wouldn’t let me on the earlier one.

I was also approached by a guy who ‘asked me to take him to the cashpoint and get some money out’, which obviously I refused. Thinking I couldn’t have anymore drama happen in one day, I headed for the train loaded with M&S snacks.

But when sitting down, accidentally managed to knock all my chicken bites over and into the feet of a fellow passenger who had to pick them up with me. Again whoops!

I was straight on the phone again telling my partner all the goss and admitted I’d felt like Bridget at the event, when we promptly realised that I was wearing pretty much an exact outfit which she wears in the film without realising! I’m definitely more like her than I thought I was, that’s for sure.

So all in all, I had a fab time sitting FROW at London Fashion Week and was pleasantly surprised that people are so genuinely nice like Kitty who I was sat next to. Maybe I’ll call her up for some fashion advice before my next show though!
