Getting rid of moss from patios can be a frustrating task as it seems to reappear within a matter of days, but luckily there is a solution that costs pennies and does not require harsh chemicals.

A gardener has revealed an easy hack to remove garden moss using items you’ll probably already have at home.

Moss on your patio is a real pain back up all the time, but don’t worry, there’s a cheap and easy way to zap it without any nasty chemicals.

Sam Christie, a gardening expert and founder of Christie’s Landscapes, says the best way to say bye-bye to moss for good is with a mix of white vinegar and baking soda from your kitchen cupboard.

He explains: “You can use products that are readily available at home, non-toxic, and biodegradable.”

The solution won’t hurt your plants or pets, so it’s perfect if you want sparkly clean paving slabs, reports Express.co.uk.

It works as a “powerful cleaning agent” because vinegar has acetic acid which gets right into the moss and burns it up, while baking soda dries it out so it won’t come back.

But vinegar can kill plants, be careful not to splash your plant pots with it and avoid carrying it out when there’s a chance of rain, which could wash the solution onto your grass..

Sam adds: “The acidity of the vinegar-water solution will lift the dirt and grime, which means that you’ll only need a brush in cleaning. Also, it is safer than other cleaning agents because it only produces CO2 and water.”

“Its effectiveness can also be improved when it is mixed with soap and tap water. Since baking soda has alkaline properties, it neutralises the minerals in the water, so it magnifies the soap’s cleaning properties.”

How to get rid of moss from patios without a pressure washer

You will need:

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Dish soap (optional)
  • Hot water
  • A bucket or big container
  • A garden broom or big stiff-bristled brush

Instructions

First, clean up your patio or driveway and give it a sweep to remove any scattered leaves or foliage.

Fill a bucket with hot water with white vinegar and baking soda mixed in. You can also add dish soap if you have it on hand.

Pour the mixture generously onto the moss-stained areas

Allow the mixture to sit on the moss for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This gives the vinegar time to effectively kill the moss.

After allowing the mixture to sit, scrub or brush away the dead moss.

Once all the moss and dirt have been removed, rinse off the patio with a garden hose or another bucket filled just with water.

Leave the paving to dry and place your garden furniture of plant pots back into place.
